„Sent to Bear Witness to the Light” (J 1, 8)

Figure of John the Baptist in Contemporary Exegetical Literature,
Biblical and Liturgical Movement 2 (2002) 146-152;
co-author: T. Hergesel.

This article introduces several points of view on John the Baptist in modern exegesis and biblical theology. Author reduces all the opinions to three perspectives: (1) John of history - John the Baptist of faith, (2) John the Baptist: between history and legend - between discourse and narration, (3) precursor of Jesus as a prophet. Author's considerations lead to the conclusion that contemporary biblical literature presents John the Baptist as a representative of the particular group in the first Christians communities as well as emphasizes the particular characteristics of prophet's personality.
